30-Year Sentence In Deaths Of 2 Kids During Police Chase In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A man convicted of involuntary manslaughter in a high-speed chase with police that killed two Detroit children has been sentenced to at least 30 years in prison.
A 6-year-old boy and his 3-year-old sister were struck by a stolen Camaro driven by Lorenzo Harris.
The 29-year-old Harris told a judge on Wednesday that he prays for the family. He says he wasn't prepared for the situation that led to the fatal chase.
Police say the chase last June began after an officer saw somebody in the car with a gun, and lasted for almost 75 seconds. Harris was driving a stolen Chevrolet Camaro at about 100 mph on a residential street when he lost control and went off the roadway, according to police, killing a 6-year-old boy and his 3-year-old sister. Three other children and a woman also were injured.
Alicia Garnder told the court she "can never stop crying" when she thinks about her kids, Michael and Makiah Jackson, who were killed.
