3 Ordered To Trial In Marvin Winans' Carjacking
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Three men will stand trial in the carjacking of prominent Detroit pastor and gospel music icon Marvin Winans.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office says 20-year-olds Montoya Givens and Christopher Moorehead and 18-year-old Brian Young were bound over Tuesday to Wayne County Circuit Court on carjacking, conspiracy to carjack, unarmed robbery and conspiracy to commit unarmed robbery charges.
Each was ordered held on a $200,000 bond pending June 19 arraignments.
Givens' defense attorney Craig Daley disputes the conspiracy charges.
"Primarily because this really is just young garden variety robbery," he told WWJ's Pat Sweeting at the courthouse Tuesday. "There was no agreement with regards to the carjacking. They weren't looking to take from Mr. Winans his vehicle. That happened as a matter of opportunity ..."
Winans is pastor of Perfecting Church on Detroit's east side. He delivered singer Whitney Houston's eulogy in February.
Winans was filling up his SUV at a Citgo gas station at Linwood and the Davison on May 16 when a group of young men attacked him. The thieves took off with his luxury SUV, some cash and a Rolex watch.
The 54-year-old sustained bruises, scrapes and a broken finger in the attack.
Arrests were made within days of the robbery.
Members of Moorehead's family said the charges and the bond were excessive. His father said his son was "running with the wrong crowd."
Winans has said he's not bitter about the attack, but the city has to change. (More on this here).
