3 Arrested After Rowdy Celebration, Fire Following MSU's Sweet 16 Win Over Oklahoma [VIDEO]

EAST LANSING (WWJ) - Police officers dressed in riot gear made three arrests following a rowdy celebration after Michigan State's Sweet 16 win over Oklahoma in the NCAA basketball tournament.

Police say a crowd of about 500 people gathered outside of the Cedar Village Apartments, the 1000 block of Water's Edge, around 12:45 a.m. Saturday immediately after the 62-58 MSU victory.

Soon after the crowd gathered, a fire was started in the middle of the roadway. Police say members within the crowd also began to throw glass bottles into the air, endangering others in the area.

After donning protective gear, officers entered the crowd and took three people into custody for disorderly conduct violations -- a 20-year-old Livonia man, 19-year-old Plymouth man and 19-year-old Marquette man. The violations consisted of unlawfully remaining within 300 feet of an open fire.

As the arrests were being made, the crowd immediately began to disperse without the use of "chemical crowd management devices."

It's unclear if the men arrested were students at Michigan State. Their names have not been released.

Police say officers were able to gain control over the situation within 15 minutes of the fire starting.
