Massive Oil Spill In Kalamazoo May Result In $3.7M Fine
DETROIT (WWJ) - A multi-million dollar fine has been recommended for the owner of a Michigan pipeline that ruptured two years ago, dumping more than 800,000 gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River in southwestern Michigan.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher reports that federal regulators propose a $3.7 million civil penalty against the Canadian owner of the pipeline, Enbridge, which is based in Calgary, Alberta.
The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration says the penalty would be the largest it's ever imposed.
It also says it's recommending 24 enforcement actions against Enbridge. A 30-inch pipeline extending from Griffith Indiana,to Sarnia , Ontario ruptured in Calhoun County... about 60 miles southeast of Grand Rapids.
