2nd Suspect Arrested In Detroit Arson Fire

There's been a new arrest in connection with a late summer arson  fire that sent several Detroit Firefighters to the hospital. The 41-year-old Calvin Jones of Detroit taken into custody Friday morning, suspected in the August 13th burning of a strip mall on East Jefferson Ave.

ATF spokesman Donald Dawkins tells WWJ an arrest warrant was served without incident. Jones was arraigned in Federal Court Friday afternoon on one count of malicious use of fire.

Meanwhile, 29-year-old suspect Samson Wright will head back to court in November. He's already being indicted on one count of malicious use of fire for allegedly destroying the building that housed several businesses.Wright told police he was approached by a person who promised him $500 to set the fire and another $1500 when the job was done.

Detroit firefighter Jeff Urbas said it's going to be a very long road to recovery for those who were seriously injured when a wall of that building collapsed.

"Four of these members are currently still in wheelchairs. They're going through various states of rehab. Some might have more surgery down the line," Urbas said.

"But, the bottom line is, they have some life-altering and possibly career-ending injuries. They may not... a few of them may not be able to return to the job they love," he said.

A dinner to benefit the injured firefighters will be held next Friday, October 15th, at the Roostertail in Detroit.
