22-Year-Old Man Charged With Murder In Greektown Shooting
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A man has been charged in the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man and wounding of another in Detroit's Greektown entertainment district.
Prosecutors say 22-year-old Denzel Talbert was arraigned in 36th District Court Thursday on first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder and felony firearm charges.
The June 21 shootings on Monroe St. are believed to have followed an altercation involving a group of men. Prosecutors say Martel Taylor and a 21-year-old man were chased and shot. Taylor was killed.
The shooting was one of two in Greektown and two dozen that weekend in Detroit. In the other Greektown case, 17-year-old man was arrested Monday in the June 20 non-fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman.
Police say surveillance video and tips from the public helped identify suspects in both incidents — the rash of violence prompting church leaders to call for more people in the community to ditch a "no snitch" policy long-observed in the city.
A July 9 probable cause hearing was set for Talbert before Judge Kenneth King. A preliminary examination in the case was scheduled for July 16.
