21 Sterling Heights Cops Investigated For 'Timecard Misconduct'
STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - In Sterling Heights 21 police officers are being investigated for alleged time-card fraud.
Sterling Heights Police Chief Michael Reese said the officers involved did not accurately report leave time on their time cards over a three-month period. Reese said the incidents were isolated in one of the department's three divisions.
"I want to assure residents that at no time during this period were street-level police services or investigative services compromised," Reese said Friday in a statement. "Delivery of police services to the public remains steadfast, professional and responsive as ever. Furthermore, additional internal controls have been enacted to ensure similar types of incidents to do not occur in the future."
An internal investigation by the department discovered the alleged fraud.
While a police spokesperson talking to WWJ Newsradio 950 would only confirm that the police chief was considering disciplinary action, The Macomb Daily is reporting that the officers have been suspended and some are considering appealing the action.
The Macomb Daily said The officers involved include the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant and captain. Reports indicate one of the department's three captains retired several weeks ago instead of facing disciplinary action.
A Sterling Heights city spokesperson said it's a personnel matter within the police department and no criminal charges were expected.
The department is not offering further comment.
