"21 Jump Street" Takes Weekend Box Office
HOLLYWOOD (WWJ) - New in theaters this weekend: 21 Jump Street, based on the television series of the same name, that ran for five seasons.
If you're planning to check it out, you may be interested in knowing that the film version of 21 Jump Street is nothing like the TV show that fans grew to know and love. The big-screen version is a comedy starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.
"The movie is about two friends -- Schmidt and Jenko -- two guys that went to high school together the first time who didn't really get along," Hill said. "Jenko was kind of a dumb bully, and I was kind of like a nerdier, uh, nerd, the first time in high school."
In addition to Hill and Tatum, this updated version stars Ice Cube as Captain Dickson -- and Dave Franco in the role of Eric, the high school drug dealer.
Fans of the small-screen version may remember it starred Holly Robinson Peete and Johnny Depp in his first major role.
21 Jump Street is number one in theaters this weekend, bringing in an estimated $35 million.
