2014 Michigan Hunting Seasons Among Safest On Record, DNR Reports
LANSING (AP) - The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the state's 2014 hunting seasons were among the safest on record, with 10 total incidents and no human deaths directly related to hunting.
The department said Thursday that last year was the first on record in which no people were killed as a direct result of hunting. It says there were 10 "reportable hunting incidents" in Michigan in 2014, equaling 2013's total for the fewest on record.
Four incidents involved small game hunters, two involved waterfowl hunters and four involved deer hunters.
Twelve-year-old Shellsea Lefebre died Sept. 21, 2014, when a rifle accidentally fired as she rode in a vehicle during a hunting trip on Drummond Island. The state says the death doesn't meet its requirements for reporting as a hunting accident.
