20-Pound Carp Loses Bid For Ann Arbor Council Seat
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - A fishy write-in campaign by a Tweeting 20-pound carp has failed in Ann Arbor.
The faux fish was angling for a City Council seat in the fourth ward, but lost handily to John Eaton.
Election officials said there were 209 write-in votes, but it wasn't immediately clear how many of those were for the carp campaign.
Upon hearing he had lost the election, the carp thanked those who shared his vision for "returning Ann Arbor to its golden age" -- including "Shelly the beatboxing turtle and John Quackles, the duck who served as legal counsel."
The carp also took time to congratulate his opponent who, prior to the election, said he welcomed the competition.
"I have a sense of humor and I think it's funny. I consider a 20-pound carp to be a substantial opponent and I wish him the best," Eaton told AnnArbor.com
Signs showing support for this fish, who touted himself as a "grass roots Ann Arbor local politician" and a "bottom feeder," grabbed attention as they popped up all over town.
Despite losing, the carp said he's looking forward to more conversations about the future of Ann Arbor.
