20 Mile High-Speed Police Chase Ends In Oakland Mall Parking Lot
TROY (WWJ) - A cross-county police chase that began with a teen shot came to an end in the Oakland Mall parking lot.
Detroit Police Lt. Patrick Jackson said the 20-mile-long chase started with shots fired, early Friday afternoon in Detroit. A 16-year-old boy was wounded.
"Apparently there was a shooting in the area of Lincoln and Seldon," Jackson told WWJ Newsradio 950's Vickie Thomas and other reporters.
"An officer was approaching in a marked unit and construction workers at the scene pointed out a black Chevy Avalanche that they believed the shooter had been either in that truck or was talking with (someone in) that truck."
That's when the driver of the Avalanche took off, leading officers on a chase from Detroit to Troy. The driver sped along I-94 to northbound I-75 and then and over a couple of curbs before exiting the freeway at 14 Mile Road.
Jackson said the driver, surrounded by police vehicles, surrendered in the mall parking lot without incident.
There were no details immediately available about the shooting itself or the teenage victim.
The suspect's name was not immediately released.
