2 Teens Held In Deaths Of Michigan Couple In Missouri
GALENA, Mo. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities in Missouri are holding two male juveniles in the deaths of an elderly couple from Michigan.
Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader says his deputies found 70-year-old Paul Brooks and his wife, 69-year-old Margaret Brooks, dead Thursday night at a home in Lampe near Table Rock Lake, just north of the Missouri-Arkansas state line.
Rader said the couple was from Baldwin, Michigan, about 30 miles north of Big Rapids. The Brooks' were reportedly seasonal residents of the quiet Missouri town.
Rader declined to say how the Brooks' were killed, except that they were not shot, nor how long they had been dead before their bodies were found. He did say that detectives found signs of foul play.
Rader said a 16-year-old and 15-year-old are being held, awaiting formal charges. The teens were arrested after a neighbor called police to tell them he was holding two young men at gunpoint after confronting them for suspicious behavior. When police arrived on the scene about 15 minutes later, they discovered the dead bodies.
Officials said the teens had run away from a nearby ranch for at-risk youth earlier this week. Investigators believe the teens broke into an unoccupied home next to the Brooks' and stayed there for several days before the killings occurred.
An investigation is ongoing.
