West Bloomfield Family, Nanny Tied Up During Home Invasion; 2 Suspects In Custody
WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ/AP) - Two robbery suspects are now in police custody after a home invasion in West Bloomfield left a family tied up inside their house.
West Bloomfield Lt. Curt Lawson said the suspects entered the home around 3 a.m. Wednesday while the family was sleeping. He said the suspects used duct-tape to restrain the married couple, two of their three young children and their live-in nanny.
"They were actually tied up in their home while these suspects went through their house, stole numerous items from within the house," said Lawson. "Then when they left, they took the victims' 2013 Chrysler Town and Country minivan."
Hours after the crime, the men -- ages 42 and 46 -- were taken into police custody in Detroit. Lawson said a team effort between neighboring departments led to the suspects' arrests.
"At this point, we're not really sure how they gained entry into the house, whether the garage door was left open or if they got a garage door opener out of a car in the driveway, but we do know there was no forced entry. We do believe that these residents were in fact true victims," he said.
Most of items have been returned, including the family's minivan, a 70-inch flat-screen TV, iPads and a Mac computer. The family was uninjured during the crime.
"Obviously there is some psychological trauma to the children and the family, these are young children," said Lawson, "but they were not physically harmed."
An investigation is ongoing.
