Semi Crashes; Closes W. I-94 At I-275
VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Charred remains are left behind as westbound I-94 is closed at the I-275 interchange in the aftermath of a collision and multiple tractor-trailer fire.
WWJ's Ron Dewey rushed to the scene, where he interviewed several witnesses. One of those witnesses, Cornelius White, who was awakened just after 4 a.m. The crash scene is just outside his front door at the South Port apartment complex along the westbound service drive past Haggerty.
"I heard a big explosion; just blew up, boom," White told Ron. "So, I jumped up ... woke my mom up; looked out the window. I see a big 'ole orange lit up in the sky; ran outside, seen that truck, then it blew up about two mo' times. Then I told my mom, I see somebody laying over there in the grass, but I don't know if they was hurt, dead or alive. I don't know," White added.
Authorities at the scene say the driver of the rig that crashed is in critical condition. No word yet as to the fate of the driver of the truck that was parked. The two tractor-trailers were still on westbound I-94; lying about 100 yards apart.
Other witnesses told Ron that the road between those two rigs was on fire. Both rigs were burned to their chassis.
Westbound I-94 remains closed at Haggerty for what could be several more hours.
