2 School Districts Closed Due To Possible Threats
MARLETTE (WWJ/AP) - Two Michigan Thumb-area school districts are closed following conversations that made references to violence.
In Sanilac County, Marlette Schools are closed the rest of the week after someone overheard students on a bus talking about a threat. That conversation was about a neighboring community, but officials chose to start the Christmas break early as a precaution. Extra curricular activities are also canceled for the remainder of the week.
Students in that district will make up the days in June.
Meantime, Cass City Schools in Tuscola County canceled after a student made a possible gun threat against an employee.
Tuscola County prosecutor Mark Reene says the threat was heard by other students last Wednesday. He says Cass City school administrators didn't learn about it until Saturday.
Cass City schools were supposed to be in session through Wednesday this week, but officials decided to cancel those class days. Investigators later concluded there was no evidence to back up the threat. Wednesday was supposed to be the last day before break.
These Michigan incidents come less than a week after a tragic mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 people dead, including 20 young children. (Follow continuing coverage of this story at our sister site, CBSConnecticut.com).
