2 Michigan Nuclear Plants Declare "Unusual Events" Following Quake
DETROIT (WWJ) - Two nuclear plants in southwest Michigan declared "unusual events" following the quake, putting them under increased scrutiny.
The Cook and Palisades plants continue to operate, while getting closer inspections, inside and out.
WWJ spoke with Prema Chandrathil who is a spokeswoman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's midwest region.
"They are walking the plants down on the inside and the outside of the plants to make sure key components, peak structures and systems are still intact, still in place, they are still operating as designed and still in the proper space," said Chandrathil.
DTE Energy officials tell WWJ that they didn't register any unusual seismic activity...or damage...at the Fermi II plant in Monroe... and they continue to operate at 100 percent power.
Federal officials say 10 other nuclear plants around the country implemented similar safety measures.
