Police Seek Tips In Gratiot Ave. Crash That Killed 2 Men
CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) - Police are investigating a weekend crash that killed two people in Clinton Township.
According to police, Macomb County Sheriff's deputies were attempting to make a traffic stop on northbound Gratiot Ave., shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, when the driver — 24-year-old Antonio Forton of Mt. Clemens/Macomb Twp. — failed to stop.
While police pursued the man in his Dodge Stratus, Forton allegedly ran a red light at Hall Road, smashing into a Chevy Avalanche driven by 45-year-old Lonnie Wimberly of St. Clair Shores who was traveling westbound.
Both men died in the crash.
An initial investigation led Clinton Township police to believe Forton may have been drinking. They're awaiting toxicology results.
Macomb County Sheriff tony Wickersham said that his department will be conducting an internal investigation to make sure proper procedures were followed by the deputies involved in the incident.
Gratiot was closed in both directions at Hall while authorities investigated the incident, but has since reopened.
Police are looking for tips in this case. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Clinton Township police a 586 493-7894.
Forton was due in court later this week for a pretrial hearing in a burglary case.
