2 Killed In Small Plane Crash
FLINT (WWJ) - Two people are dead after a small plane crashed Wednesday, about 5 miles northwest of Flint.
Elizabeth Ishim Corey, of the Federal Aviation Administration, says the single-engine plane departed Dalton Airport in Flushing, around 7:30 a.m., but then disappeared.
"A concerned family member notified us that the aircraft did not reach is destination of Owosso Airport in Owosso, Michigan," Corey told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil. "A notice of missing aircraft went out ... local search and rescue started looking along the flight path."
The plane was discovered shortly before 4 p.m., in a wooded area about a half mile away from the airport, in Genessee County.
Corey said the pilot didn't file a flight plan. "We encourage people to file flight plans ... and that flight plan enables us to start search and rescues earlier," she said.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating why the plane went down — but the investigation is expected to take several months to a year.
The name of the pilot and the passenger were not immediately released.
