2 Killed In Crash Closing I-696 At I-96 In Novi
NOVI (WWJ) - Two people are dead following a crash along I-696 in Novi Thursday morning.
Police say three vehicles were involved in the accident, on the westbound side of the freeway at the I-96 westbound ramp, under I-275.
Michigan State Police Lt. Calvin Hart says a flatbed tow truck driver was stopped was on the shoulder assisting a stalled motorist when his vehicle and the disabled vehicle were hit by a passing SUV that, for some reason, had veered off the roadway.
"The driver as well as the driver of the vehicle that struck the tow truck were killed," Hart said.
An MSP investigation is underway.
The names of the accident victims have not been released, pending notification of family.
MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross told WWJ that the closure of westbound I-696 at the scene may last into the afternoon rush. Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
