2 Kids Killed, 5 Others Hurt In US 23 Crash
PITTSFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Two children were killed and five other people were injured in a hit-and-run rollover accident Friday afternoon on US-23 near Michigan Avenue in Pittsfield Township.
A statement from Michigan State Police says a white 1999 Ford Expedition, driven by Dawn Siegel and hauling her 4 children and 2 step-children, rolled over several times just before 3 p.m.
Witnesses told police the Expedition was traveling in the left lane of southbound US-23 when it was "cut off" by another motorist. Siegel attempted to avoid the vehicle, but lost control on the shoulder.
The two children who died are identified as Jordan Siegel, 14, and Ashley Siegel, 12.
Dawn Siegel, Chris Siegel, Madison Owens, Erica Fox and Brooklyn Siegel were transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital. All were listed in stable condition Friday evening.
Witnesseses said the suspect vehicle was a light gray or silver mini van, possibly a Honda Odyssey. The vehicle reportedly has a paper license plate in the back. The driver was reported as possibly being an Arabic female possibly around 40 years old. The vehicle will likely have driver's side damage. The year is unknown, but MSP Lieutenant Michael Shaw said it appeared to be a newer model.
He is urging the driver of that Odyssey to dial 9-1-1 and turn him or herself in.

Following the crash just before 3 p.m., southbound US-23 was closed at Michigan Avenue. Traffic on the northbound side was also slow because of gawkers. The accident scene and investigation was cleared around 7:30 p.m.
