2 Downriver City Employees Charged With Racketeering In Sports Betting Operation
FLAT ROCK (WWJ/AP) - A police officer and public works employee from Detroit's southeastern suburbs have been charged in connection with an illegal gambling operation involving bets on pro and college football.
The Michigan Attorney General's Office says 46-year-old Flat Rock police Sgt. Charles Sanders Jr. and 35-year-old Trenton city worker Kevin Sargent are charged with racketeering and 14 counts of illegal sports betting.
Sanders also is charged with misconduct in office.
Authorities say bets were collected during work hours, and at least one bet was collected from the front seat of a Flat Rock squad car.
Sanders and Sargent were expected to be arraigned Wednesday. The Associated Press couldn't reach the court to see if they have lawyers.
