2 Detroit Teens Killed In Separate Incidents
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are investigating the deaths of two teens overnight -- a boy and girl, killed in separate incidents.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reports one teen was fatally shot in an attempted robbery and the other teen died less than an hour later after being struck by a car.
Police say a 16-year-old boy and his brother were walking home near Fielding and Vassar on the far-west side when they were confronted by three robbers. One of the suspects fired several shots, striking the teen, who was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. His brother was not hurt.
Around the same time as that incident, police say a 16-year-old girl was struck and killed as she crossed the street near the corner of Fenton and McNichols near Telegraph. Investigators think the girl may have been run over twice as the driver of second car said he did not see her body on the road. Witnesses say the girl may have been holding an umbrella at such an angle she could not see oncoming traffic. It is not yet clear if lack of working streetlights could have been a factor along with the weather.
