2 Critically Injured When Small Plane Crashes Into Backyard
PITTSFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Two people were critically injured after a single-engine plane crashed into a backyard in Pittsfield Township.
The plane went down at about 11:44 a.m. in the backyard of a residence south of Michigan Avenue.
Huron Valley Ambulance crews took the two patients to St. Joseph Hospital.
Elizabeth Isham with the Federal Aviation Administration said the flight originated out of Ann Arbor. She said it crashed about three-and-a-half miles southeast of Ann Arbor Airport.
Jan Haupt was enjoying her morning inside her home on Winchester Drive when suddenly a dark shadow came over her skylight. Moments later she heard a loud crash.
When she went outside to investigate, she saw the remnants of the plane.
"The guy did a marvelous job of bringing her in," Haupt told WWJ Newsradio 950's Kathryn Larson. " ... missed the house, the deck, everything. I mean ... he couldn't have but it in a better place."
Haupt, who is a trauma tech, stayed calm as she called 9-1-1 and ran to the two victims who were still in the cockpit of the plane.
"You know, I just tried to calm her down and said just please don't move until we get help. Help's on the way. And you could hear the ambulances immediately coming," Haupt said.
The female passenger, in her 20's, had numerous broken bones. The man, in his 30's, was unresponsive. But once EMTs arrived he regained consciousness and complained about neck pain.
The pilot's intended destination was not immediately known.
FAA officials are investigating. Cory said it will likely be weeks before a formal report is issued as to the exact cause of the crash.
