2 Arrested In Hit-And-Run That Put 8-Year-Old Detroit Girl In ICU
DETROIT (WWJ) - Two people are in custody in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left an 8-year old girl in critical condition.
Detroit police had been looking for suspects since Monday afternoon when, investigator say, the car's driver ignored a stop sign on an ice cream truck, causing the accident on the city's west side.
According to witnesses, Kamari Smith was walking across Robson Street, near Fenkell and Hubbell, to buy ice cream when she was hit by a Dodge Charger, which traveling around 50 miles per hour.
The driver stopped only briefly at the scene, witnesses said, before speeding off.
The girl remained in critical condition Friday morning in an intensive care unit Children's Hospital of Michigan.
Detectives were questioning the two "persons of interest," and a vehicle was seized.
Detroit Police Sgt. Mike Woody said it would take a few days to determine if the car is the one that struck Kamari.
Touching base with reporters Friday afternoon, Police Chief James Craig said it's still early in the investigation.
"I certainly wanna applaud the diligent work by our investigative team that has worked on this case so diligently," he added.
The names of those in custody were not immediately released.
