2 Arrested For Attempting To Steal Catalytic Converters
AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - Police say two people who were witnessed trying to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle parked in a carpool lot were found with 10 other stolen converters in their possession.
Twenty-one year old Titus Bigelow, of Highland Park, and 23-year-old Amber Cherry, of Detroit, were arraigned earlier this week in 52-3 District Court on one charge each of attempted larceny from a motor vehicle, which is a two-and-a-half year felony offense. Both are due back in court on July 1 for a pre-examination conference.
Their arrests stem from an incident that occurred around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Ride Share carpool parking lot on Baldwin Road near I-75 in Auburn Hills.
According to police, a witness pulled into the parking lot and noticed the suspects cutting a catalytic converter off of a vehicle with a reciprocating saw.
As the witness called police to report the incident, the suspects began to leave the area before actually taking the converter they were trying to cut from the car, police said.
Officers responded in the area and stopped the suspects' vehicle, a 2007 black Buick Lucerne, as it was leaving the parking lot. Inside the vehicle, police said officers located 10 catalytic converters along with various tools used to cut them from cars.
Investigators are now working to determine where the other catalytic converters were stolen from.
