19-Year-Old Missing Child Case Remains A Mystery
DETROIT (WWJ) - A missing child case that dominated the headlines in metro Detroit and across the nation 19 years ago remains open.
It was December 1994 when 4-year-old D'Wan Sims was reported missing by his mom from Wonderland Mall in Livonia.
Now, 19 years later, the two detectives on the case have retired and department officials are only saying that they have not received any legitimate tips in years, and they are following protocol with the still-unsolved case.
The Center for Missing and Exploited Children are still on the case as well.
"We do have a case manager that's been working with the family since D'Wan had been reported missing," said Executive Director Robert Lowery. "Unfortunately, this child's been missing since 1994, but we have stayed active and have been helping where we can."
The center did release an age progression photo of the child, in hope that someone might recognize him.
"We face the same realities that everyone does in these cases," said Lowery. "The longer these children have been gone, you know, the likelihood of finding them is sometimes not very high."
Police maintain that D'Wan was never at the mall that day with his mother, who police said failed two polygraph tests. She maintains her innocence.
On a Facebook page, "Remembering D'Wan Sims," someone posted this week that they may never find an answer or closure in his disappearance.
