19-Year-Old Ex-Con Charged In MSU Student's Death

EAST LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Police say a 19-year-old ex-con has been charged in the shooting death of a 20-year-old Michigan State University student at his off-campus apartment.

Marquay McCoy was arraigned Thursday on open murder, armed robbery and firearms charges. He was ordered jailed without bond and is due back in court for a probable cause hearing March 28.

Police say McCoy shot Dominique Nolff on Jan. 31 at the off-campus Cedar Village apartment complex in East Lansing while trying to steal medical marijuana and a laptop.

Nolff was shot multiple times and later died at a hospital. His 20-year-old roommate, who was also shot, was treated at a local hospital and released.

Police have said the shooting doesn't appear to be random, although they did not elaborate.

Police arrested McCoy on Feb. 18 for violating terms of his release from prison. According to reports, McCoy was released on Jan. 7 after serving nine months for assaulting a police officer.
