16-Year-Old Footballer Charged With Punching Opposing Coach
WEST BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A 16-year-old high school football player in metro Detroit has been charged with assault and battery, accused of punching an opposing team's assistant coach following a game.
Oakland County Sheriff's Deputies took the West Bloomfield Township player into custody after Friday's game at Rochester Hills Stoney Creek. He then was released to his parents.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard said a warrant for the high school junior was issued Thursday. The teen's name was not released.
West Bloomfield schools spokeswoman Pamela Zajac says the student, who is a junior, remains on suspension as the district continues to investigate the attack.
Police say 67-year-old Harold Zube, who coaches freshman football at Stoney Creek, was knocked to the ground after coaches from both teams argued following the 50-28 victory by Rochester Hills. Authorities said the assault occurred as players were leaving the field.
