$15M Grant To Hire 400 Flint Residents For Recovery Jobs
FLINT, Mich. (AP) - The federal government is providing up to $15 million to temporarily hire 400 Flint residents to aid with recovery from the city's water crisis and to train people for permanent employment in other fields.
The U.S. Department of Labor on Wednesday announced a National Dislocated Worker Grant that was requested by the state.
Labor Secretary Thomas Perez says some of the $7.5 million issued initially will fund humanitarian jobs such as delivering bottled water, filters, replacement cartridges and lead-testing kits to residents.
Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan says the 400 temporary workers could be employed for up to a year. Gov. Rick Snyder says he appreciates the U.S. government's "prompt and positive reaction" to Michigan's proposal.
The funds will be administered by the local workforce development agency.
