15,000 Loaves Of Bread Donated To Metro Detroit Families In Need

DETROIT (WWJ) - A gigantic shipment of bread arrived at Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeasten Michigan warehouse in Detroit — and all of it will go to feed local people in need.

A whopping 7,500 loaves of Family Style Italian Bread arrived at around 10 a.m. Tuesday, donated by Aunt Millie's bakeries. Another 7,500 loaves will be delivered on the Dec. 15,  for a total value of $41,850.

Who will eat all that?

"We distribute our food through about 500 partner agencies," explained Gleaners Director of Philanthropy Erica Peresman. "So we are going to make this bread available to our partner agencies and they in turn will distribute it to their clients...and it's gonna be wonderful, because that's a lot of bread!"

In all this year, Aunt Millie's will donate 100,000 loaves to food banks.

"We're a family owned companies, and obviously we believe in giving back to the communities we exerciser," Steve Swallick, Sales Supervisor for Aunt Millie's in Mount Clemens told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

Since the program started in 2009, Aunt Millie's has donated over half a million loaves of bread to food banks across the Midwest.
