15 Mile Road Reopens At Site Of Massive Sinkhole
FRASER, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - Drivers, businesses and residents along 15-Mile Road have reason to cheer, with the reopening of the busy street Tuesday morning.
A ribbon-cutting for the repaired road was held in Fraser at the site of the sewer line collapse that caused a massive sinkhole nearly one year ago.
The county says it's the last major step in the completion of the $75 million repair project.
Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller credited engineers, construction crews and others for their contributions.
"This day has been a long time coming," Miller said. "But when we stop and realize what has happened here in just under a year, it truly is a testament to the engineers, the construction crews, the finance team – just everyone who has been part of this team to bring us to this point."
Paula Giacona, who owns a beauty supply store at the corner of Hayes and 15 Mile, was among those who dealt with the longterm closure and construction.
"They worked so hard; we're just so happen that it's done," she said. "It's great."
Sewage earlier began flowing again through the major interceptor line and officials marked the milestone during a September ceremony. The line 60 feet (18 meters) below ground serves roughly 500,000 Macomb County residents.
Twenty Fraser families were temporarily displaced, three homes were condemned, and roads were shut down because of the sinkhole that formed when a sewer line collapsed on Christmas Eve.
