14-Year-Old Boy Charged With Murdering Sister's Boyfriend
GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - The Kent County Prosecutor's Office has decided to charge a 14-year-old with open murder as an adult.
The boy, who was arraigned Thursday, is accused in the shooting death of 20-year-old Michael Haminger.
Though he's being charged as an adult, prosecutors tell The Grand Rapids Press the teenager's case will be handled in the circuit court's family division, Prosecutors reportedly said if the teen is convicted, he's likely to be incarcerated for 12 to 20 years, with the first five in the juvenile system and a minimum seven additional years in the adult system.
Haminger died in front of his girlfriend's parents' home on Powers Avenue in Walker, located just north of Grand Rapids, on Sunday. Police say Haminger was expecting a baby with his girlfriend -- the sister of the 14-year-old boy -- who was due to give birth in about two months.
Haminger's parents said their son was working toward obtaining his GED so he could provide for his young family and that things "were just starting to straighten out for him."
Visitation for Haminger is planned for Friday.
