12-Year-Old Gets 'Intensive Probation' In Friend's Sleepover Shooting Death
MARLETTE TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A 12-year-old Sanilac County boy who pleaded guilty to reckless discharge of a firearm in the accidental fatal shooting of a friend has received a sentence that includes 30 days in a detention facility.
The boy, who pleaded guilty last month, was ordered Tuesday to serve 10 days in a facility immediately. The rest of his detention will be considered following "intensive probation," which could last until the boy is at least 19-years-old, prosecutors said. He was also ordered to pay nearly $2,000 in restitution to the victim's family.
Other terms of the boy's probation include wearing an electronic monitor, 30 hours of community service, anger management counseling, random drug and alcohol testing, adhering to a curfew and attending every day of school, unless he has approval from a probation officer. He's also prohibited from having access to firearms or making contact with the victim's family.
Separately, the boy's father, Jerry Northrup, avoided trial by pleading guilty to firearm possession by a felon and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Eleven-year-old Tyler Dunn died Nov. 23 from a rifle shot during a sleepover at Northrup's Marlette Township home, about 65 miles north of Detroit.
The boys had been left alone for "a considerable period of time" when the incident happened, according to the prosecutor's office. Sanilac County Sheriff Garry Biniecki said an "older model" .30-30 rifle was used in the shooting.
Northrup is expected to be sentenced in the case on June 18.
