12-Year-Old Detroit Boy Killed In Drive-By Shooting
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit police have one person in custody in the drive-by shooting death of a 12-year-old boy.
The shooting happened early Saturday morning in the 1400 block of Rutherford Street, near Schoolcraft and Greenfield roads on the city's west side.
Sunsearae Hall told WJBK-TV that her son, Kenis Green Jr., was sitting outside with other family members celebrating a relative's birthday when a driver passed by in a burgundy van and sprayed the porch with bullets.
"I yelled and told the kids to run in the house," Hall said fighting back tears, "and he was the last one running in the house."
Hall said her son was shot in the head. Hall's 25-year-old boyfriend, Gregory Owens, was also shot and is currently hospitalized in serious condition. No one else was injured.
Police said the person of interest has not yet been formally charged, as they're waiting for the prosecutor's officer to make the next move.
Hall told reporters she thinks the person in custody is a neighbor who recently had a confrontation with Owens.
"He thought that he was trying to talk to his baby mother and he put a gun out that night on him," Hall told WJBK-TV.
Hall said her son, who loved music and playing football, was just getting ready to enter the eighth grade.
"It doesn't bring my son back, but I'm happy that they caught him," she told WJBK-TV.
