12-Year-Old Detroit Boy Injured After Using Lighter On Bullet He Found In Street

DETROIT (WWJ) - A curious Detroit boy was injured by a bullet, but it didn't happen during a shooting and a weapon wasn't even involved.

The incident unfolded around 9:45 p.m. Friday in the 18000 block of Prevost, in a west side neighborhood near Outer Drive West and Greenfield Road.

According to police, a 12-year-old boy was playing outside when he found a loose bullet on the street. The boy was fooling around with the bullet and at some point, police say he lit the base of it with a lighter.

The bullet exploded and shrapnel hit him in the arm.

The boy was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were described as "not serious." Police said the boy is now recovering at home.

It's not clear where the bullet came from, or how long it had been in the street.
