11 Michiganders Make World's Richest List
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Michigan checks in with 11 spots on the latest Forbes 400 list of the world's richest people.
Supermarket magnates Hank and Doug Meijer took the 49th spot, with a net worth of over $8 billion.
Amway founder Richard DeVos was 60th on the list, worth nearly seven billion. Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert was 118th at nearly four billion dollars. Other local names include the Ilitches, Alfred Taubman, Matty Moroun and family, William Ford Senior, and Roger Penske.
Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates is still America's richest man, taking the top spot in the Forbes 400 list for the 20th-straight year — with a net worth of $72 billion.
Investor Warren Buffett, the head of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., remains in second place with $58.5 billion, while Oracle Corp. co-founder Larry Ellison stays third with $41 billion.
Brothers Charles and David Koch, co-owners of Koch Industries Inc., stay tied for fourth with $36 billion each.
Twenty newcomers climbed into the ranks, including Don Hankey (#342) of Auto Loans at $1.6 billion, GoPro's Nicholas Woodman (#386)at $1.3 billion; and Richard Yuengling Jr. of D.G. Yuengling & Son (# 371) at $1.4 billion. David Duffield's fortune is up 205% to $6.4 billion from $2.1 billion last year, making the software entrepreneur — currently co-CEO of Workday and former head of PeopleSoft — the largest percentage gainer this year (#65).
Approximately 1 in 10 of these billionaires are foreign-born; and, according to Forbes, 273 members of the list are self-made billionaires; 71 inherited their wealth, and 56 inherited at least a portion but are still growing it.
Forbes says America's super rich continued to increase their wealth over the past year, with the 400 people on the annual list posting a combined net worth of $2 trillion, up from $1.7 trillion a year ago. That marks their highest combined value ever.
Forbes attributed the growth to strong stock and real estate markets.
