11 Hours Of Terror: Mother, Daughter Abducted By Crack Smoking Carjacker
DETROIT (WWJ) - "Eleven hours of sheer terror." That's how Ferndale Police Lt. William Wilson describes what happened to a Detroit woman and her 11-year-old daughter Thursday night.
"It's like something you'd expect to see in some terror TV movie," Wilson told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil.
"They were driving, were carjacked at gunpoint and basically kidnapped and held hostage for eleven hours...This person drove around and was doing crack with the victims in the vehicle the entire time," Wilson said.
During the ordeal, the suspect, at one point, carjacked another motorist and forced the victim and her daughter into that vehicle. He forced the Detroit woman to call her sister, a Ferndale businesswoman, and ask for ransom.
The sister — who is not being named to protect the victims — agreed to meet the suspect in Detroit. "She gave him the money, and the victim was apparently told by the kidnapper to drive. So she took off quickly and her sister was unable to keep up with her," Wilson said.
That's when the businesswoman contacted Ferndale police.
"The officers immediately began working with AT&T to get a location of the victim's cellphone. And when they were doing that," Wilson said, "the woman received another call from her sister (the victim) saying that the kidnapper wanted another $300."
Eventually, Wilson said, they tracked the car to Chalmers and Harper on Detroit's east side.
The suspect took off running, but was discovered with the help of Detroit police cowering in basement of a vacant home. Wilson said what looked like a handgun actually turned out to be a replica.
The case was turned over to Detroit police, who say the mother was sexually assaulted, and the carjacker had attempted to assault the daughter as well.
The suspect remained jailed Friday. His name was not immediately released.
