10K Power Outages Reported, Dark Detroit Schools Close Early
DETROIT (WWJ) - About 10,000 power outages were reported, late Tuesday morning, as heavy rains pounded Southeast Michigan; and several Detroit schools closed early due a Public Lighting problem.
Dossin, Edison, Carver and Dixon school were closed. At Ann Arbor Trail, Breithaupt, Cooke, Emerson, Gardner, Ludington, Mann, Charles Wright, Detroit Public Schools Spokesperson Kaniqua Daniel-Welch said students would be released on delayed closure once parents were notified. Ongoing problems with Detroit's decrepit electrical grid have been a continuing concern in the bankrupt city; and outages such as Friday's are not uncommon. Attributed to "system overload", a widespread outage last summer shut down power to Wayne State University, the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, the City-County building, and midtown museums for two days.
WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Dr. Joe Sobel said fast-moving storms could bring large hail and wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour. [More on the weather HERE].
DTE spokesman said they're expecting more outages Tuesday as severe weather rolls in. One of he hard-hit areas so far is near Sibley and Telegraph Road, south of Detroit.
