1 Man Dead After Police Interrupt Gun Fight In Middle Of Street
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police in Detroit and Highland Park are investigating the shooting of a man at the intersection of Pontchartrain and McNichols.
Assistant Detroit Police Chief Chester L. Logan tells WWJ's Mike Campbell that cops on surveillance in another case heard and saw two men shooting at each other on Hamilton near McNichols and tried to get them to stop shooting, when the two suspects ran.
"They chased one gentleman north on Hamilton ... they ordered the gentleman to drop his weapon, the gentleman leveled the weapon at one or more of the officers and the officers fearing for their safety - fired," said Logan.
He later died of his injuries at an area hospital.
Logan says no cops were injured in the shoot out or subsequent take down of the suspect. The second suspect did escape on foot; police are still searching for him.
Logan tells WWJ that any shooting is dangerous but this one took place during daylight hours at a busy intersection where people are often walking.
