1 Dead, 3 Hurt In Pre-Prom Party Shooting
SAGINAW (AP) - A shooting in a parking lot during a party where hundreds of students and their family members gathered before a Michigan high school prom left a 17-year-old girl dead and three women injured, police said.
The shooting happened about 6 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot at Florence Event Hall in Saginaw, about 85 miles northwest of Detroit. Police Sgt. Reggie Williams said there were "multiple shooters," but officials didn't say whether suspects had been identified.
Williams had earlier instructed students not to gather for a pre-prom event, which he said is an annual occurrence, MLive.com reported.
"Every year, we usually have an incident of some sort," he said. "Last year, we had shots fired. The year before, we had a fight."
Williams told reporters at the scene that the department hadn't confirmed whether the teenager who died was a student at Saginaw High School, which had its prom at another facility about eight miles away. The women -- ages 18, 19 and 39 -- were taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.
Names weren't immediately released.
Students had first gathered at another location in the city on Thursday for the unofficial pre-prom event, but were kicked out and moved to the hall, Williams said. The Saginaw Police Department is investigating the shooting along with Michigan State Police.
The school's prom at Crooked Creek Banquet Center in Saginaw County's Thomas Township went on Thursday night following the shooting.
