1 Child Killed, Several Others Hurt In Crash
DETROIT (WWJ) - One child was killed and several other people injured in an accident in Midtown Detroit.
According to Detroit police, a truck hauling dirt from the Detroit Medical Center expansion site crashed into a passenger car carrying a woman believed to be in her 30s and four young children.
Detroit Police Fatal Squad officer Scott Sheets said an unidentified driver with three children in the vehicle disregarded a stop sign near East Hancock and Brush. Police said that caused the gravel hauler to hit the vehicle carrying the children.
Detroit Police Fatal Squad officer Scott Sheets said it appears the truck driver had little or no chance of slowing down.
A 6-year-old child died. An 8-year-old boy was in critical condition Monday afternoon. The other two children, both under age 10, received non-life-threatening injures.
The truck diver was unhurt.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting spoke with Stratford Newton who works in the area.
"I've been driving down here for 18 years. It's something about this stop sign at Handcock and Brush. I see people blowing that stop sign all the time," Newtonsaid.
No names have been released.
Officer Sheets said it appeared the non of the children in the car were properly restrained.
