1 Charged, Another Arrested In Slaying Of Church Musician On Christmas Eve

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - One person has been charged and another has been arrested in connection with the Christmas Eve murder of a Detroit musician.

Charles Cox, 35, was arraigned Thursday on murder, carjacking, armed robbery and firearms charges in the shooting of Anthony Tolson on Dec. 24, along Gratiot Ave., south of 8 Mile Rd., in Detroit.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said and outpouring of tips led to Cox's arrest in Taylor.

Craig also confirmed that an 18-year-old Inkster man, Darnell Gene-Arthur Young, who also is a suspect in the slaying, was taken into custody Thursday night.

According to police, Tolson had just finished performing at a church service and had stopped at a market when he was ordered out of his vehicle, shot and killed.  The suspects took his SUV which was packed with presents for Tolson's three children along with his bass guitar and other equipment.

No motive for the shooting has been revealed and Craig won't say at this time whether it's believed Tolson knew his killers.

Cox and was remanded to jail pending a probable cause hearing set for Friday, Jan. 22. Young is currently being held in the Detroit Detention Center. Information on a possible arraignment was not immediately available.
