Wrong-Way Driver Pleads Guilty To All Counts
DENVER (CBS4) - A woman has pleaded guilty to driving drunk and causing a wreck which killed a recent Colorado State University graduate in July.
Elizabeth Jane Long could face up to 24 years in prison and $750,000 in fines. That's the maximum for the vehicular homicide charge. It's not clear what sentence she will receive as each of the eight charges she has pleaded guilty to have their own ranges.
Long pleaded guilty to charges that included vehicular homicide, several counts of vehicular assault for injuring two other people, leaving the scene of an accident and DUI.
Long's attorney says it is more unusual to see someone plead guilty to all the charges they face, but that his client is also unusual. In past court appearances Long has appeared devastated over what happened, breaking down into tears countless times.
Long voluntarily checked herself into rehab after the accident that killed 22-year-old college student Mary Warren when she was driving drunk down the wrong side of Interstate 25 in July. State patrol said her blood alcohol was more than three times the legal limit.
In the past Long told the judge that she never wanted to drive again.
Long waived her right to a trial on Tuesday. Prosecutors said that the other victims had anticipated a trial and in fact were anxiously awaiting their day in court to speak. Because of that the judge has agreed to give the sentencing a half day so that can happen.
