DENVER (CBS4) - A woman was killed after being stuck by a car while trying to cross the street.

Police say the woman was hit while try to cross near the intersection of Alameda Avenue and Quebec Street.

Detectives and witnesses say they believe it was likely an accident.

Dianne Popenhagen and her daughter were among the first witnesses on the scene. She says the man driving the car was responsible for the accident and told her the woman came out of nowhere.

"He didn't flee and he didn't leave. He stayed with her," said Popenhagen.

She was by his side as he performed CPR and tried to save her life.

"I helped him turn the woman over and perform chest compressions," said Popenhagen.

Denver police are working on identifying the woman who was hit. They say she was in her 60s.

They are not sure right now what charges, if any, the driver will face.

They say the woman was not in a crosswalk.
