Woman Accused Of Stealing From Volleyball Team & Construction Company
DENVER (CBS4) – A woman accused of stealing thousands from a high school volleyball team is also suspected of taking a lot more money from a Denver business.
Kathleen McGrath, 56, is involved in two theft cases -- one in Jefferson County where money raised by parents and students was stolen from the Chatfield High School volleyball team. The other is in Denver, where she'll be in court soon, accused of stealing $170,000 from a construction company.
Police say McGrath stole almost $10,000 from the Chatfield High School Volleyball Booster Club. The coach called police when she discovered money was missing and McGrath, the treasurer for the club, couldn't be found.
McGrath was an authorized signer on the account, funded by fundraising efforts by parents and players to benefit the team. Investigators say there was a large amount of checks written to Cosco, Walmart and Verizon -- places the booster club wouldn't be using.
CBS4 also discovered McGrath is the suspect in a Denver theft case involving Metro Construction. The arrest affidavit says she embezzled about $170,000 while working as a bookkeeper and charged an additional $10,000 worth of gas on a company card.
In the Denver case, investigators say McGrath made 174 unauthorized payments to businesses and people. The affidavit says she would write the checks for one thing but enter them as something different in QuickBooks to hide where the money was going.
The affidavit says McGrath also has a civil case against her with Capital One bank where a judge ordered her to pay $48,000.
Her next court appearance is this Thursday in Denver.
