Westminster PD Arrest Alleged Hit & Run Driver Who Struck Biker

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) – Police in Westminster on Thursday morning arrested a 43-year-old man who they believe was behind the wheel of a vehicle that struck a bicycle rider who later died and then drove off.

Police arrested Gregory Kirk Hauptmann on charges of failure to remain at the scene after an accident with a death and failure to notify police of an accident.

Police said in a prepared statement that "through accident reconstruction and evidence at the scene, detectives were able to identify a make/model of a vehicle." Detectives then checked on new repair jobs at local body shops and were able to determine that Hauptmann's car, which was brought in for repairs, was allegedly the one involved in the crime.

The crash happened late at night in the 9900 block of Westminster Boulevard on June 8 and David Hernandez, the bike rider, died in the hospital a week later.

The area where Hernandez was riding is not well lit, doesn't have much of a shoulder and has only two car lanes, but Hernandez's family told CBS4 that he had been riding down that stretch of road to and from work for two years without incident.

Hernandez's bike was found about a thousand feet away from where the crash happened. Police say it was likely dragged under the car.

A passerby found Hernandez in the middle of the road and stopped to resuscitate him.
