Western Colorado Campground Closed Because Of Bears

GLADE PARK, Colo. (AP) -- A campground in western Colorado has been closed after hungry bears raided some campsites.

The Bureau of Land Management said Friday that the Mud Springs campground in Mesa County will remain closed until Sept. 2.

BLM spokesman David Boyd says the bears were drawn to campers' food partly because the berries they depend on have only recently begun to ripen due to the late winter.

The hope is that bears will switch to their natural food supply and leave the area.

One camper reported that a bear didn't show any fear of her or her dog even after she yelled at it and hit it with a shoe.

A run-in with a bear has also prompted the U.S. Forest Service to prohibit tents and soft-sided trailers at a campground near Aspen.
