Unattended Space Heater Blamed For Fire In Jefferson County

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- West Metro Firefighters believe an unattended space heater in the garage ignited a house fire Wednesday afternoon in unincorporated Jefferson County.

The large fire broke out at about 3:15 p.m. in the 16000 block of Mountain Bluebird Way in the Willow Springs neighborhood near Morrison. Firefighters rushed to the scene after hearing reports of an explosion.

Firefighters arrived 20 minutes later to a garage that was fully engulfed in flames.

"I started hearing this popping and sizzling noise and I looked out the window and I saw flames coming out of the garage," said neighbor Christine Baumgartner.

Most of the damage was contained to the garage. There was some smoke damage in the home. Investigators estimate about $150,000 worth of damage.

Three sisters ages 8 to 13 escaped the home unharmed and saved the family pets.

"My dog was barking and we looked out the window and we saw this ginormous fire. And we didn't know what happened. We wondered if the three girls were alright or anything like that," said neighbor Cole Halax.
