Truck Smashes Into Pawn Shop In Possible Burglary Attempt

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - A truck crashed into a pawn shop overnight, and police are trying to determine if it was a burglary attempt.

The incident happened at about 1 a.m. at the EZ Pawn store near the intersection of 9th and Sheridan.

Police are trying to find two men who were in the Dodge truck at the time of the crash.

The truck was driving at a high rate of speed south on Sheridan when it crossed a parking lot and jumped between two pillars in front of the pawn shop and plowed into the building, causing a massive hole in the wall.

"We can see in some surveillance video the two male parties exited the truck and took off on foot," Steve Davis with Lakewood police said. "It does not appear to us at this time that they took anything from the store. So whether this was an attempted burglary, or it could have been a traffic accident, slash DUI; that's a possibility too; or quite frankly could be all of the above."

Police later said they feel pretty certain it was an attempted burglary because they feel it was calculated the truck made it through the two pillars in front of the building.

The suspects were wearing masks and dark hoodies. Police say they have a piece of clothing they feel will be key in finding the suspects.

Police say the Dodge truck was stolen out of Denver. The truck's owner, Eric Marshall, hadn't realized the truck was missing out of the alley behind his house.

"It was like a bulldozer," Marshall said. "Ram tough ... ha, ha."

Marshall said the suspects could have gotten away with much more.

"The car was parked in the ally and was taken, but prior to leaving they used my garage door opener to open my garage door and could have taken many thousands of dollars of tools and left them," Marshall said.

The damage to the building and the items inside the store is estimated to be in the tens of thousands.
