Truck Gets Stuck Under C-470 Overpass, Closes I-70

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 had to be closed at Colfax Avenue because the load of a semi truck got pinned underneath the C-470 overpass Saturday afternoon.

The ramps from westbound 6th Avenue and Colfax Avenue to westbound I-70; and the ramp from westbound C-470 to westbound I-70 were also closed, according to Stacey Stegman with the Colorado Department of Transportation.

There were no injuries and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Stegman said the truck was carrying what appears to be an asphalt hopper. It was a permitted oversized load, but was in the wrong lane when going under the bridge.

"It appears to have caused damage to the bridge and at least two girders. CDOT bridge inspectors will be evaluating the bridge to determine the extent of the damage," Stegman said in a statement.

Crews got the vehicle and the asphalt hopper out from under the bridge and I-70 was reopened around 5:30 p.m.

The driver was cited for careless driving and damage to a state structure.
